It is officially July, which means it’s officially National Hot Dog Month in the United States. The weather is hot and the grills are hotter, so get ready to chow down on the quintessential American food.
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (yes, it’s a real thing) estimates that 150 million hot dogs across the country will be consumed on July 4th alone, but National Hot Dog Month runs, well, all month long! So, why stop with July 4th? In fact, why stop at a simple dog with some mustard thrown on there? Load that puppy up!
From original Coney Dogs to something a little different, here are three hot dog “huts” (houses?) in the Metro Detroit area we think Detroiters, Michiganders and even some out-of-towners will appreciate, especially during National Hot Dog Month.
Sharing a space with another Detroit-made establishment, Laika Dog is the restaurant arm of UFO Factory, a bar and music venue in Corktown. The names of the joint establishments make a lot more sense when you know that Laika Dog gets its name from a mixed-breed dog named Laika whose claim to fame is being one of the first animals in space and the first animal to orbit the Earth. Laika Dog’s menu puts the power of choice directly in your hands with a completely customizable hot dog menu, complete with both organic, grass-fed beef and field roast brand vegan options.

It may be sacrilege in this town, but if you’re looking for a classic, Chicago-style hot dog, look no further than Sal’s in Trenton. The windy city classic Chicago Hot Dog (mustard, onion, relish, sport peppers, tomato, pickle spear on a poppy seed bun with some celery salt) leads the menu followed by the Chicago Polish (skinless Polish sausage, mustard, onion, relish, sport peppers, tomato, pickle spear and some celery salt). If a classic Chili Dog is more your thing, don’t fret; Sal’s has you covered [in chili].
Making it’s mark as not only a hotspot for lunch, but also a favorite late-night, we-just-left-the-bar-and-something-greasy-sounds-amazing spot, Campau Tower serves up some truly delectable hot dogs. There are classics like the Detroit dog (chili, mustard and onion), but also the perfect late-night/early-morning hot dog, aptly named the Good Morning (bacon, fried egg and cheese). Next time you find yourself in Hamtramck, stop by Campau Tower for some of the best grease-worthy food your heart can bear.
